Up for the exercise challenge?

Here at House Party most of us love exercise and staying active! Whether it's a morning run, heading to the gym, biking to work or simply getting a walk in with man's best friend, we each have our own approach here at House Party HQ. There are exercise trends and fads that come and go, but among the more popular organized exercise options in the last couple years have been Boot Camps and CrossFit. Both Brian and I have recent experiences with colleagues giving these trends a try and here's what we found!

Several of us decided to put ourselves to the challenge by trying a Boot Camp Class at Valkyrie Boot Camp - conveniently located right across the street from our office in Irvington, NY. It was an awesome 45 minute exercise class where everyone was encouraged to workout at their individual level.

We signed up for a 5pm exercise class and went out together after work. The trainers were motivating and friendly. They started us off with a warm-up outside: running, doing lunges and more. They then continued our exercise indoors on the equipment. It was an exciting workout - mixing up techniques like planks with time spent on the rowing machine. We left the workout feeling re-energized and would love to try it again!

Brian took the challenge of fellow House Party colleague, Josh, by visiting EVF Performance Upper East Side to try out one of their 360 CrossFit-style exercise sessions. Brian's no slouch when it comes to exercise, but without any recent marathon training and a busy life taking-hold, he felt it was a worthy opportunity to try-out a much different exercise method than he was used to (a more traditional gym workout and extensive running) to get back on-track.

With Josh's reassurance and an opportunity to take advantage of a free guest pass that Josh had, it was time to dive-in! EVF is in a convenient location in NYC and certainly a no-frills experience. With instructors and members that are impressively fit, the session was both grueling, non-stop and exciting! For someone who's used to exercise methods that are more consistently long, aerobic work-outs (running 5-10 miles) or weigh training that is distinctly punctuated by short anaerobic bursts with some rest, this all-out, non-stop pace was totally different. It wasn't since two-a-day college lacrosse workouts that Brian remarked feeling this all-out.

The workout cycled through several exercises with a partner in a race against other paired partners. From wall ball squats with a medicine ball, to kettle bell lifts, to wall climbs, to a short run in each cycle, Brian was admittedly out-of-his-element. While being a first-timer was plenty humbling, it was completely evident how this style of workout could do a number to build muscle and overhaul metabolism without a doubt. While this may not be quite what Brian's set to keep doing week-in and week-out, like Josh, it was certainly an impressive trial with some inspiring everyday athletes, some pain and some serious learnings. Even on the way out of EVF, you're reminded as you ascend the stairs of the fundamentals to continue to build upon your return!

So there are just a few examples of some of the workouts that we're talking about here at the House Party offices, but what about you? What workouts do you recommend we try? Post in the comments and let us know!
