Here at House Party, we know a thing or two about throwing a party. So we thought, who better to share some insights into hosting, than some of the very hosts who are House Party members. In this new ongoing series, we'll be interviewing some current House Party hosts and members for their take on being the hostess with the mostess and what has them coming back to House Party week after week!

Tara Cormican[1]

Today, we're talking to Tara C. of Minnesota:

1. What made you join House Party?

When I first heard about House Party, I was shocked that there was a way to host parties that was based around many products that I already wanted to try! I signed up because I started seeing some parties that I knew I could host well and that my friends would really enjoy!

2. Give three of you best party planning tips.

Ah, good question! I think three of my top tips would be the following:

    • Invite friend groups that already exist.

I try not to mix my friend groups because I find that fewer people show up because they're nervous about meeting new people, so now I select just my sorority friends, or just my Bible study group, or just my friends from my school years, etc. Sometimes if I think there is someone who could be easily introduced, I add them to the mix, but otherwise I try to keep the groups as 'natural' as possible to ensure people showing up and having a great time with friends they know and like!

    • Create and stick with a theme.

If the party has a natural theme, 'own it'! For example, if the party is for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, make Oreo Mickey faces, trail mix with Mickey colored M&Ms, Mickey shaped pizzas or pancakes, and anything else you can think of to go with the Mickey theme; then you decorate based on that same theme with some party plates, cups and napkins that have Mickey on them, (your local party store is bound to have some, and if not, pick Mickey colors, like red, yellow and black for plates, cups and napkins.)

    • If there isn't an obvious theme, make your own!

For example, if you're hosting a Mac 'N Cheese party, maybe you want the theme to simply be 'Yellow-Gold' and have everything be yellow-gold in color. Serve up some pineapple, gold delicious apples, mangos, yellow peppers, and corn alongside your Mac 'N Cheese main dishes! Then decorate with all yellow-gold decorations! Also ask your guests to wear golden-yellow if they have any!

    • Share good ideas with others on the party page once you're selected to host!

If you share your good ideas and others share theirs, you'll all host better parties, and your party-goers will have an even better time! I think sometimes we feel like we need to keep our good ideas to ourselves so that we have the 'best' party, but once you've been selected to host, you've already got the party, now you just need to execute it, (which is how idea sharing can really help)! I strongly recommend sharing your ideas and inviting others to share theirs on the main party page!

3. How do you incorporate the theme of a party?

I sort of answered this above in my second tip for party planning, but I really just tell myself to 'own it'! I try to make everything revolve around that central theme - from plates to placemats and food to drinks, I like to make everything fit in nicely with the theme! And I use Pinterest to help me plan, and that's really helped me with the themes!

4. How do you get guests involved in your parties?

In some cases, we've made the party potluck style, so that's one way to get others involved, but most often the way I create involvement is by creating an event on Facebook for the party. By having a Facebook event I can create polls for attendees to take, share updates with them, post photos, share my Pinterest page, and more; I do all this on the Facebook event page to create a sense of community and to get the attendees involved long before they show up at my door on the day of the party! This seems to be the best way to build up the party beforehand, build buy-in and to get others involved!

5. What is your:

    • Favorite party recipe or snack?

I loved the Morningstar Farms foods that we tried at the Morningstar Farms House Party! I could eat a few of those every day, if I could mix and match like we did at the party! (Craving them now!)

    • Favorite House Party experience?

I think the 'Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure House Party' or the 'SodaStream Sparkling Summer House Party' were my favorites, simply because there was so much to do using only items the House Party pack, (though we did a lot more than just use the included pack)! The 'Kinect Rush: A Disney Pixar Adventure House Party' was just in and of itself tons of fun; the kids got to create their avatar and run around all evening with their favorite Pixar characters! The 'SodaStream Sparkling Summer House Party' included so many fun recipes and drink options that we were testing them all night long, and really enjoyed the product and giveaways!

    • Favorite TV or movie?

I have a hard time picking just one, but I love comedies, so some of my recent go-to shows have been 'Friends', 'How I Met Your Mother' and 'Melissa & Joey'. And for movies I really got a kick out of 'Blended' and 'The Other Woman'. (My go-to feel good movie, however, is 'Horton Hears a Who'.)

    • Favorite hobby?

I love theater! I was involved in my high school and community theater many years ago now, but I still absolutely adore watching musicals and other on-stage productions! So between my time in theater and in the audience, I'd have to say that one of my favorite hobbies is acting!

6. If you could host a party anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Africa. Definitely Africa. If I could,I would host a shoe party for orphans in an African country with Sole Hope, or a water party with Living Water International with an impoverished village. I love Africa, and to host a party for those darling children would make me the happiest woman in the world! To make their little faces beam as they received life-giving water, or shoes to save their feet from jiggers and infection, (or any party gift, really), would be the highlight of my year, (or possibly my life)!

7. If you could host a party around any product or brand, what would it be and how would you make that party extra special?

I think the parties I'd most love to host would be a Nespresso party, an Omega VRT Juicer party, or a Chevy Malibu party! (Ok, I know one of those is far less likely than the others, but a girl can dream!) My more realistic dream party would be a Nespresso or Omega VRT Juicer party because I so enjoy coffee drinks and juicing, but if Chevy ever decides they want to have someone host a House Party for the Malibu, (or any of their vehicles, really), I will make it look so good that all my attendees will want one too! (Chevy: call me, maybe?!)

8. What could we do that would make your House Party experience even better?

The only thing I can think of, at all, is to give better giveaways in some of the Party Packs. Most Party Packs are perfect, with fun, usable giveaways and prizes, but some don't have take homes for attendees. Coupons are always appreciated on the House Party item(s), but also meaningful giveaways or party-enhancing giveaways!
