In each installment of The 4-1-1, we interview a different member of the House Party Team, asking the big questions that are on everyone's minds. In this installment, we're chatting with Steve Kerneklian, House Party's Associate Creative Director. Around the confines of the office he's endearingly known as Handsome, Special K or Steve K. Clearly he prefers the former! Steve oversees copy for all of our events and works hand-in-hand with our Creative Director, Jerry Simon. He's a diehard Redskins fan (poor guy), exists on a diet of salad and coffee, and has been known to like a good glass of scotch from time to time. He also coaches his son's soccer team. Danielle, our Senior Copywriter, and the person who bestowed the "handsome" moniker upon him, recently sat down to get the "inside scoop."
How did you get started as a writer? I started off in newspaper and magazine publishing doing proofreading and copyediting, and then after moving to New York, I got a job in advertising where I got my start as a copywriter.
What was your favorite or most memorable job? Once upon a time there were things called newspapers that were actually printed on paper. Because we've become such a digital society, I enjoy looking back on those crazy days and late, late nights working against deadlines in the newspaper business - crazy stories, crazy people - lots of fodder for my upcoming novel.
What's harder - working at House Party or coaching your son's soccer team? Definitely, coaching my son's soccer team. The talented, intelligent and engaging people here at House Party make my job easy. Motivating 6-8 year olds after a long day of school takes a lot of work - but it's worth it.
You always have a mug of coffee at your desk. How do you like it and what's your favorite? I enjoy French Roast - KeurigR K-CupR Tully's French Roast is my go-to at home. I tend to stick with French Roast varieties here at work as well when they're available. I drink it black.
The Redskins? Really? Hail to the Redskins! I grew up in the Washington, DC area and I fear my family will disown me if I ever strayed away from my team.
If you won the lottery, what would you do first? Reality: Become debt free and help those in need. Fantasy: Buy the Redskins and take them out of Maryland and back to DC where they belong!
How do you stay so handsome? Seeing all the beautiful, smiling faces at House Party motivates me to maintain my handsomeness. Oh yeah, and the fact that we keep the office dimly lit helps, too.
Have any questions for Steve? Post them here and we'll try and make him answer them!
