1. 13. 16. 21. 30. 40. 50. 60. No, I'm not creating some crazy number pattern - these are typical milestone birthdays. The ones that somehow tend to mean more than the others. And the ones we either celebrate with utter fanfare, or(for some who are getting older) ignore and pretend they never happened. Today is my milestone birthday. Possibly the biggest one yet. I'm glad to report that today I turn 40. I see no shame in this. I will not call this the 10th anniversary of my 30th year, or pretend to be younger than I am. I have earned every single one of these years and I look damn good for them, if I do say so myself. Frankly, I am in the best shape of my life, have a job I love, a beautiful child and wonderful friends and family. This is a cause for celebration if there ever was one.
Now, I've never been one to be shy about my birthday. I normally shout it from the rooftop and shamelessly encourage presents from anyone who's willing (should you feel compelled, presents may be mailed to our office located at 1 Bridge St., Ste. 3, Irvington, NY 10533). But this year, the big year, I'm truly milking it for all it's worth. I got an iPad. Both sets of parental units are taking me to dinner. Last week my Mom took me to see War Horse at Lincoln Center. (It's amazing!) I'm doing drinks tonight with my friends and a dinner Saturday night with friends from almost every phase of my life. I guess this is more like a birth"week" rather than birth"day"!
It's more than just celebrating myself(!), it's about feeling grateful for what I have and what I have to look forward to. I see this as a turning point in my life. I likely - hopefully - have 40-50 more years on this planet and I plan to make them the best years they can be. Here's to the next milestone and lots and lots of cake!
