Alternative Sushi

Before you balk at this post, lest you shun the idea of raw fish (and to that we'll reply, "That just means more for us!") this post is about anything-but-fish sushi. Inspired by something we spotted on Pinterest (where did our ideas used to come from before this virtual pinboard?!), we decided to think out of the box and have some fun with the "roll" concept of sushi but with other foods for any meal and occasion. So, without further ado, we present alternative sushi. Enjoy! Breakfast sushi

Ingredients:

  • 1 Banana
  • Peanut butter (creamy works best but crunchy is a nice option)
  • Rice KrispiesR, CheeriosR or any smaller grain cereal

Remove the banana from the peel. Smooth peanut butter over one side of the banana. Drizzle cereal over peanut butter covering it as much as possible. Then roll over and repeat on the other side. (I tried covering the whole thing in PB first and it's messy! Consider yourself warned!) Then cut the banana into about 6 "sushi-sized" sections. Viola! This is a healthy meal you and your kids will love! My son took one bite and declared, "This is good!" For a more dessert alternative try chocolate Rice KrispiesR. Yum!

To really "play-up" the alternative sushi option, Brian took it as a personal challenge to build a couple of the most ridiculously sugar-laden creations possible. (Let's keep in mind that Brian was also the one to follow LifeHacker's recommendation to cook using one's dishwasher - so let's just say we provided fair warning!)

Get your toothbrush ready and check out what he's calling the "Sugar-Woe-Bomb," the "Choco-PB Sashimi Gulp" and the "Dark Chocolate Nigiri-mallow."

Sugar-Woe-Bomb

Ingredients:

  • 1 "Fruit by the Foot" fruit snack
  • 1 Large-size marshmallow
  • 1 Oreo cookie
  • 1 Small package Boston Baked Beans

Twist apart an Oreo cookie, making sure to keep the side with the crust and icing. Slice one large marshmallow in half in a latitudinal manner. Place the cut, sticky end atop the Oreo icing. Wrap this with the Fruit by the Foot, creating a collar taller than the marshmallow. Simply pour in some Boston Baked Beans and voila - one Sugar-Woe-Bomb!

Choco-PB Sashimi Gulp

Ingredients:

  • 1 "Fruit by the Foot" fruit snack
  • 1 Large-size marshmallow
  • 1 Oreo cookie crust
  • 1 Chocolate peanut butter cup

This one's a piece of cake...er, we mean candy. Square-off a marshmallow and add to the top of it a rectangular piece of Oreo cookie crust. Add about a third of a chocolate peanut butter cup and wrap it all "sashimi-style" with a strand of Fruit by the Foot. Be sure to taste test plenty of these before serving ;)

Dark Chocolate Nigiri-mallow

Ingredients:

  • 1 "Fruit by the Foot" fruit snack
  • 1 Large-size marshmallows
  • 1 Section of a Hershey's Special Dark chocolate bar

Same as the "Choco-PB Sashimi Gulp," square-off or halve a large marshmallow. Score one section of a Hershey's Special Dark Chocolate Bars and wrap it with a piece of Fruit by the Foot. Done and done. And seriously - don't forget to brush your teeth after these or you'll be sure to have your dentist on your case. Enjoy!
