Happy National Doughnut Day!

Doughnuts. Cue images of Homer Simpson drooling over a pink-sprinkled one, cops dunking them into their coffee as they sit at their speed trap, and in countless commercials for "better breakfasts" in which the doughnut was the villain. But...there's way more to National Doughnut Day than meets the eye. Yes, I'm serious. The Salvation Army National Doughnut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of June and was founded in 1917 on the front lines of World War I by The Salvation Army. Generous and thoughtful female volunteers earned the nickname "Doughnut Lassies" as they not only filled American soldiers' hungry stomachs with our favorite breakfast treats, but also boosted the morale with their cheerful presence. You can read the whole story over at The Salvation Army's blog - they even posted recipes!

Where will you get breakfast? Of course, the day wouldn't be complete without the major doughnut players giving out some free eats. Dunkin' Donuts and Tim Hortons are ready to slash prices - you can get a free doughnut with a beverage purchase (but double-check with the companies and your local stores for deal details). Krispy Kreme is celebrating by releasing a new flavor - Key Lime.

Doughnuts or donuts? I did some digging, and couldn't really find a definitive answer. According to Grammarist.com, "the dictionary-approved spelling for the ring-shaped cake made of dough and fried in fat is doughnut. The shortened donut has been around since the late 1800s, but it wasn't popularized until the late 20th century, when the successful American doughnut chain Dunkin' Donuts made it ubiquitous." All of that aside, I think I have a solution for this epic battle. We should just use pictures to talk about the wonderful doughy goodness...and our feelings about it.

Sorry we made you crave a doughnut. What's your favorite kind: glazed, frosted, cream-filled, jelly-filled, crullers...? Share recipes if you have them!
