Parental spring fever

Parental spring fever

My typically very organized brain has been falling apart of late. In talking to some friends, the same thing is happening to them! It's a phenomenon I'm taking the liberty to call it "parental spring fever." This isn't the kind of spring fever though where you're falling in love, enjoying the warmer temps outdoors and making romantic bonfires on the beach. Rather, this spring fever is the kind where you make silly blunders left and right and can't seem to get through a day where nothing goes wrong. Truth be told, this actually happens each spring and I can't help but laugh at some of the recent "mommy" moments...those moments where I begin to see it all start to go downhill. It tends to start for me on the on the morning of the "spring forward" time change where, in calculating the time change, I ended up waking my entire family 2 hours early for the weekend soccer game we had to get to. We had all been out late at a family party the evening prior, so we really could have used that extra time to sleep! But, alas, parental spring fever set in...and, sure enough...we were springing WAY forward.

Another perfect example came as I packed lunches for my kids. I proudly packed them up, handed them off and was happy to have time to make my own lunch. Perfect, right? Well, it was only later that day that I found out that I had in fact completely forgotten to pack my most of my daughter's lunch. So, needless to say, she unfortunately had a 100% citrus-based lunch. She resourcefully was able to buy something at her cafeteria, however, which was a relief! Still, our second example here was beginning to make it clear to me that parental spring break was in full-swing. (Whether it's the "break" my brain had already begun to go on at this point - hence the errors - or simply an indicator of the "break" it so badly needs, the term "break" frankly seems a perfect descriptor for this malady.)

While we're on the topic of lunch, there was another day in which I was running out the door to head to work and grabbed my lunch (a piece of leftover chicken in a piece of tin foil). As the lunch hour arrived, I excitedly went to eat my lunch, however, as I unwrapped it, I found only a piece of uncooked chicken waiting for me instead! Not only was I bummed to have to resort to eating from the office pretzel stash for my lunch, but, ironically enough my husband had "suggested" I label the tin foil the prior night so I would know what it was! (For those keeping score at home: Parental spring fever: 2, Betsy 0.)

When I was talking to another mom-friend of mine and we were remarking on this mysterious seasonal "parental spring fever", she told me how she managed to wear two totally different shoes to work the previous day! So, needless to say, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's suffering!

This all leads me to a funny article I'm reminded about, written by Jen Hatmaker, that has now made its rounds among my mom friends. She perfectly sums up the direction this year is heading in right about now in her blog post Worst End of School Year Mom Ever. I completely identified with her in this article, as parents begin to limp across the proverbial finish line as work, kids, school and other obligations begin to just wear you out! If you're a parent, perhaps this fatigue sets in at a different time, but chances are you've felt it.
