Major league soccer season kick-off

Major league soccer season kick-off

Typically when spring rolls around, most Americans are waiting with baited breath for baseball season. But believe it or not, there's another sport that gets going right about the same time and it's actually becoming pretty popular. I'm referring to Major League Soccer. Now, many people in this country become soccer fans every four years when the World Cup rolls around, but Major League Soccer has been gaining in popularity for several years, recruiting some top players from Europe, and creating expansion teams in cities all around the U.S.

One such team is the newly founded NYCFC, or the New York City Football Club. Yes, the name is lame, but since the Red Bulls made the move to far out New Jersey, New York has been clamoring for a team of our own. Currently the NYCFC is playing matches at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, but the desire is to give the team its own stand-alone stadium in one of the five boroughs of New York City at some point. Of course, this has resulted in a lot of turf wars and bureaucratic wrangling, so there's no timeline for when or if this might happen, so for now, I'm making the trip to the Bronx for the home games.

Yankee Stadium hosts the NYCFC...for now.

One of the great things about the MLS, you see, is that it's one of the most affordable tickets in all of professional sports. My son is a huge soccer fan, and has always followed Arsenal, a London-based club, but he's never had a home team of his own. When I heard about the NYCFC coming to New York and looked into season tickets, it was very reasonable and felt exciting to be a founding member of something new.

Someone was very excited after the first goal.

I grew up with my parents having season tickets to the NY Islanders hockey team, but I've never had my own as an adult. It feels cool to be part of something launching and it gives my son and I something to look forward to since it's quite a long season, wrapping up around October! The games are sporadic, so it's not a heavy lift, schedule-wise. And I am looking forward to spending time with him over the course of the season, as well as meeting our fellow season ticket-holding neighbors.

The first game had some bumps and bruises (hello inept security at Yankee Stadium!) but we witnessed 2 goals and a win for our home opener, so it doesn't get much better than that. People were chanting. It was supportive and peaceful and there was a palpable sense of excitement at being there for the beginning of the club's history.

Our seats are great and covered, so rain won't be an issue!

I don't know what kind of season we have in store, but I do know the backers of the team are very intent on success (80% of the team is owned by Manchester City, an England-based club, and 20% is owned by the Yankees). So for now, we'll just enjoy the ride and see where it goes.

Are you an MLS fan? Who do you support? I'd love to hear all about it.
