Over the rainbow: St. Patrick's Day magic with a leprechaun visit

st. patrick's day

Although it's an easy and casual holiday, St. Patrick's Day can be tricky when it comes to kid-friendly fun since green beer isn't on the menu. That said, children love any occasion for celebration and imagination, so make the day mischievous and magical with a visit from the leprechauns. These silly tips and tricks will help you create St. Patrick's Day memories made of gold.

Leprechaun traps

Depicted as mischievous sprites, Irish folklore defines leprechauns as conniving little characters who love mischief, gold and the color green. Tradition says that capturing one of these quirky creatures will result in the captor being granted three wishes in exchange for release - and one of these wishes may be a trip to the elusive end of the rainbow where a pot of gold awaits. Who wouldn't be enchanted by such a search?

Get creative by collecting items around the house in an attempt to lure a leprechaun into your trap. Gather boxes, pipe cleaners, tiny treasures, wrapping paper, markers, glue and glitter (if you're brave), and challenge your children to brainstorm a way to entice leprechauns into temporary captivity. There's no surefire way to catch one, so encourage cleverness and let them do the work themselves. Their ingenuity may surprise you - and that's half the fun!

Leprechaun tricks

Don't be disappointed to find empty traps in the morning - it's hard to out-trick a professional trickster! Check around for evidence of their arrival and be on the lookout for the following pranks:

  • Lucky breakfast:Breakfast is an important meal, and as such, should be the healthiest of the day. Not in leprechaun land! Healthy cereal might be swapped with something more fun, like Lucky Charms, complete with a cardboard leprechaun tucked inside. A discreet drop or two of green food coloring in the bottom of a glass makes pouring white milk turn into a colorful surprise.

  • Mustache mischief:Using fake mustaches and family photos, the little green men can turn the entire family into amusing leprechaun look-alikes with very little effort.

Leprechaun treats

Although occasionally naughty, leprechauns also have a sweet side. Even if they don't whisk you away to the end of the rainbow, they may deliver a pot of gold after all. A tiny hat or cauldron packed with chocolates wrapped in gold and deposited alongside a sweet note serves as proof of their generosity and goodwill.

An outside search may even reveal evidence that leprechauns set up camp in your area, and if you're extremely lucky, they might have left their clothesline of green shirts outside. Snagging one will bring great luck, but attempting to open the little door will have the opposite effect, so don't touch!

If you'd like to create a leprechaun abode of your own, make a door out of cardboard, coffee stirrers, paint and a dollhouse doorknob or bead. Search the internet for instructions on folding origami dollar bill shirts, and string them up using baker's twine, twigs, and tiny clothespins (available at craft stores).

After all, leprechauns can be unpredictable and sometimes you have to make your own magic!

So, set your traps on the eve of St. Patrick's Day, read a Leprechaun-related tale before bedtime, and keep your fingers crossed for a trip over the rainbow with your tiny guest as a guide. Good luck and stay green!
