Family Ski Weekend

"I want to snowboard!" "When are we going to ski?" These are the constant calls from our 8 and 11 year-old children in the hopes that this winter will finally be the winter for our first family ski experience. My wife and I are skiers and we're excited to finally take the kids down the slopes, but for me, the planning was a mountain I didn't want to tackle. It seemed very daunting and potentially very expensive. The way I broke down my planning was:

Go to the mountains or a local hill? Since this was the first skiing experience for the children, I wanted to dip our toe into the snow and find someplace locally to go skiing. I know it isn't as glamorous as spending a weekend in Vermont or whisking off to Jackson Hole for the ultimate skiing experience, but it makes sense and can become a place where we return often while they build their confidence.

It's going to cost how much? Ok, skiing can be somewhat expensive for a family of four. I seem to have forgotten that or blacked it out from my memory. I wanted to have this family experience but also not force my family to eat jelly sandwiches for a month in order to afford it. We searched on Groupon and LivingSocial as well as the mountain's sites for deals and we purchased an offer that included equipment rentals, a 1-hr lesson and a lift ticket for only $33 per person. Score!

Now that we have it all planned, it's time to get going!

Wait? Smile! You're creating memories. To quote the great 80's philosopher,Ferris Bueller, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop to look around every once in a while, you might miss it." I tend to get so wrapped up in the process I forget to stop and enjoy the experience. Remember, this is what you've been waiting for. Have fun!, Laugh often and remember you're creating a memory for you and your family of this experience.

I'm sure this won't be our last ski trip as a family and I'm sure that years from now the kids will regale us with stories referring to the tiny hill they learned to ski on as one resembling a treacherous double black diamond mountain that rose into the clouds, and how they conquered it with ease! But the one story that's likely to remain the same is the one of their Dad falling while showing off, and all the fun they had.
