Just because award-season has come to a close, doesn't mean movies go on hiatus. Here we offer some of the upcoming films we're most excited to see in 2012. Jared's Picks:
The Dark Knight Rises: I mean, come on - how is any other movie supposed to compete with the final installment of Christopher Nolan's/Christian Bale's epic trilogy? You can bet your britches I'll be there on opening night.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: I love Tolkien's work, and while I found the Lord of the Rings films a bit disappointing, I have no doubt that this release will leave me far too giddy for my own good.
Lincoln: The history major in me can't not choose "Lincoln," which will focus on the last few months of our 16th President's life. Add to that the fact that Lincoln is played by Daniel Day-Lewis, who starred in one of my favorite films ever (There Will Be Blood), and this is a must-see.
Moonrise Kingdom: Yes, this looks like every other Wes Anderson film. But I've quite enjoyed every other Wes Anderson film, so I'm happy. And just look at that cast: Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Edward Norton, TildaSwinton, Jason Schwartzman and Harvey Keitel. Bring it on.
The Hunger Games: I will admit to perhaps being a teenage girl trapped in an(ahem) slightly older woman's body, but this book series is for anyone who loves action, suspense, tension, political commentary and a dash of love. I devoured all three books and CAN'T wait to see if the movie does them justice.
Brave - First of all, it's Pixar. Second of all, it's Pixar. Never a studio to disappoint and featuring its first female protagonist, this animated tale of a princess who defies an age-old custom has everything you want from the people who brought you Toy Story, Up, Cars, WALL-E and more. A female who's defiant? Sign me up. And it's perfect for the kids and the parents. A win-win.
The Bourne Legacy - I loved the first three Bourne films. And the casting of Matt Damon didn't hurt either. But, I'm intrigued by the casting of Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) who doesn't play Jason Bourne, and in fact, the timing of this film takes place after the other three. Not before, as previously thought by most film geeks. Instead he plays someone who went through the same training program as Bourne. Look for fast-paced action and lots of car chases.
The Avengers - I have a kid who loves superheroes, so this one's a no-brainer in my household. It's basically most of the Marvel franchise: The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Thor and more. I am probably not as excited to see it as my son, but nevertheless, it's on the list.
