Cooking with Liz: snowed-in treats

Here in the New York/New Jersey area, we already have a snowstorm under our belt this year, and I’m sure more are to come. So, with that in mind, I thought I’d share some of my snowed-in recipes to keep on hand this winter as a treat for the family, or even as a tasty appetizer or side at your next party.

Mug brownie

You can thank Pinterest for this post.

Ever crave a brownie or a cookie? Of course you do. Do you ever want to make a full batch or go out and find a bakery to satisfy it? Probably not! Well, I’ve got your solution: a mug and a microwave.

SarahSarah is a friend of House Party. Sarah held a few roles during her three years with the company, most recently as our Community Manager. This is a fancy way of saying that she made sure that you were heard, helped and having fun. She also tweeted as one half of the contributors to our @HousePartyFun Twitter handle with Jared. She was born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, but has since moved to the northern corner of New York City, where she lives with her boyfriend and their sassy chinchilla, Rufus. Audiophiles at heart, they’ve crammed-in five guitars and way more speakers and gigabytes of music than a little apartment should hold. Her party tip: no matter the size or type of party, put on music just loud enough to cover up the sound of chewing (ew!), but not chatting.

Alternative Sushi

Before you balk at this post, lest you shun the idea of raw fish (and to that we’ll reply, “That just means more for us!”) this post is about anything-but-fish sushi. Inspired by something we spotted on Pinterest (where did our ideas used to come from before this virtual pinboard?!), we decided to think out of the box and have some fun with the “roll” concept of sushi but with other foods for any meal and occasion. So, without further ado, we present alternative sushi. Enjoy!

Hosting a Vegan Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving stirs up warm memories of loved ones gathered around a smorgasbord of comfort food. But maybe you’re looking for a healthier alternative this year. Why not try something different and provide some vegan options? Many vegan recipes are also allergy-friendly and yield a lower glycemic index (better for diabetics), so they can often accommodate a crowd with diverse dietary needs, without compromising flavor! I promise, they all taste amazing! And just like you can “sneak” healthier fare into your kid’s food, you may be able to just serve some of these without revealing just how healthy they are.

Hot fall beverages: drink up and keep warm

There’s something soothing about holding a piping hot drink in your hand as the fall and winter temperatures move in. Whether you’re dreading the chilly breezes yet to come, or are gleefully awaiting the outdoor activities that emerge as snow begins to fall, I think we can all agree that a mug full of your fave hot beverage easily brings a smile to the face of even the most cantankerous characters.

When Brian isn’t skydiving or mountain biking he loves to travel, woodwork and peruse an old favorite, Calvin and Hobbes. Brian’s number one party tip is to fire up the grill – no matter what the occasion or the temperature outside, it’s just not a party without some sizzle! (That, and to ensure the makings for a good Manhattan are near.)

Cooking with Jerry: Cuban Chili

Check out Jerry’s recipe for Cuban Chili. Jerry’s recipe won “best presentation” at our House Party chili cookoff! This could be due to him playing cuban music from his computer under the crock-pot and his garnishes of avocado and lime.

Cooking with Larry: Harvest Moon Chili

When I heard we were having a chili cook-off, I knew I had to submit an entry. Chili can be prepared so many different ways, but the flavors can become a bit monotonous. One of the categories for judging in our chili cookoff was “originality”, so I figured I could have a little fun with this recipe and bank on some style points. I didn’t win the competition, but my chili was completely gone by the end of the contest. I’ll take that outcome any day. Also, as a devout foodie, it was pretty darn cool serving celebrity chef, Michael Psilakis, a bowl of my very own chili.

House Party Chili Cook-off

Every so often, the Party Cats like to show their competitive side. You may remember the great pumpkin battle Brian and I faced-off in back in July. It was a fun challenge, but there were a few problems with this concept. One, who cooks anything with pumpkin in July? It’s a fall ingredient! Two, we never really established a set of rules for judging; we ended up watching the company stuff their faces with gooey, cheesecakey pumpkin desserts without determining a clear winner.

Waffle recipes for any time of day

I love waffles and make them for any mealtime occasion. If you think waffles are just for breakfast, check out the versatility that these delicious cratered morsels have to offer. A decent waffle maker can make all the difference — if you don’t already own one, you can consider purchasing one at a reasonable price.
