Six Reasons to Join a Wine Club

Six Reasons to Join a Wine Club

As I’ve mentioned in a previous post, one of my favorite hobbies is to go wine tasting, and expose visiting friends to wines they don’t have access to back home. My friends are always shocked when I tell them that I belong to several wine clubs. I don’t know why, but there seems to be this intimidating mystique about a wine club. So, I’m going to give you six reasons to join a wine club and hopefully shed some insight on to why it’s a really good idea!

Wine tour tips: a wine country survival guide

Wine tour tips: a wine country survival guide

Since I’ve moved to California, I’ve discovered that one of my favorite hobbies is to go wine tasting. I live 40 minutes outside of Napa Valley and I take full advantage of my geographic location. According to my foursquare profile, I have visited 53 wineries since I created an account in July of 2010. That doesn’t count multiple visits to my favorite wineries like Saintsbury, Hill Family Estate and Kastania Vineyards. Heck, I got engaged in a winery. It’s kind of my thing. By the time this post goes live, I’ll be above the 60 winery threshold.

California cooking: Top 5 recipes with avocado

California cooking: Top 5 recipes with avocado

I recently moved to California and one thing I’ve been pleasantly surprised to discover is that avocados are pretty cheap out here. I’ve paid as much as $2.50 for an avacado back east but I’ve paid as little as fifty cents per avocado here in the East Bay area of California. I love avocados because they have so many uses. I’ve compiled a list of my top five recipes with avocado that don’t involve making guacamole.

I went and got engaged

Brian did it.

Michael did it.

And about a month ago, I finally did it. I proposed to my girlfriend and she said yes. It was one of the most nerve-racking experiences of my life.

Stand up comedy tips for beginners

Stand up comedy tips for beginners

I am a big fan of stand up comedy. It’s an art form I’ve appreciated for years and something I’ve always wanted to take a stab at, but had no idea where to start. I like to write and I knew that was a large part of the battle, but writing and being funny is a completely separate entity. How much do you need to write? How do you write it? Am I even funny?

Cooking with Larry: Make hummus in 10 minutes

Fact: Everyone loves hummus (well, almost everyone). I’ve never met a person who doesn’t like it. Hummus is great because it’s a low calorie delicious snack food. It’s not laden with butter, oils or saturated fats. Every time I make it for a gathering, it gets devoured  by my guests with little or no remorse.

Best food apps for your smart phone

Best food apps for your smart phone

Traveling is a lot easier than it used to be thanks to the sheer amount of information that we hold, literally, in the palm of our hands. Gone are the days of lugging around MapQuest printouts and travel brochures. I feel pretty confident now that you can drop me off just about anywhere in the country and I’ll find a good place to eat, a nice spot to have a beer or a unique place to grab a cup of coffee.

Cooking with Larry: homemade pumpkin pie

If you’ve read any of my cooking posts, you know I like to get a little wacky in the kitchen. For years I tried to finagle with homemade pumpkin pie to make it more creative and give it some more pizzazz, but some recipes are perfect the way they are, and I believe pumpkin pie is one of them.

Cooking with Larry: Harvest Moon Chili

Cooking with Larry: Harvest Moon Chili

When I heard we were having a chili cook-off, I knew I had to submit an entry. Chili can be prepared so many different ways, but the flavors can become a bit monotonous. One of the categories for judging in our chili cookoff was “originality”, so I figured I could have a little fun with this recipe and bank on some style points. I didn’t win the competition, but my chili was completely gone by the end of the contest. I’ll take that outcome any day. Also, as a devout foodie, it was pretty darn cool serving celebrity chef, Michael Psilakis, a bowl of my very own chili.
