There’s something in the air…

There’s something in the air…

When we started this blog a little over a year ago, we made the purposeful decision to avoid posts pertaining directly to House Party events – announcements of new parties, host-selection notices, and the like. There are lots of other ways to keep up with that information (Facebook; Twitter; email), so we wanted this to be a breath of fresh air, a space where you could get to know us, and we you, on a more personal level. So, over these past few months, we’ve shared some of our favorite recipes, our Oscar predictions, and even our stories of true love, while you’ve been generous enough to tell us about your chocolate obsessions and your awkward Valentine’s Day memories.

Happy Boxing Day!

Happy Boxing Day!

Growing up in Canada, “Black Friday” meant nothing to me (well, our Thanksgiving is also in October, so that may have something to do with it…). That doesn’t mean I didn’t have the ridiculous experience of Black Friday-esque sales, early mornings and crowds at the mall, though. For us Canadians, this scary-but-fun morning happens on December 26th: Boxing Day.

(Holiday) Party on!

(Holiday) Party on!

The trees are up, lights are strung and wreaths are long since hung. Today is Christmas Day and all the preparation is done. The time to simply enjoy each other’s company is finally at hand. House Party made time a little over a week ago to do exactly this — catch-up, exchange gifts and reminisce about another year’s hard work. As you can see there was plenty of enjoyment to go around!

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and deep wishes of peace to you and yours from the entire House Party team. (Holiday) party on!

It’s National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day

It’s National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day

Chocolate. Nectar of the gods. Silkener of tongues. Mellower of moods. Chocolate is so darn good you could just about cover anything in it and it would taste amazing. In fact, yesterday just happened to put that theory to the test- it was National Chocolate-Covered Anything Day! For real. Though we don’t typically post on weekends, we definitely thought this was worth celebrating – even if it’s the day after. (Speaking of which, shouldn’t this be more like a week-long festival anyway??) Although no one really knows the origin of this fantastically conceived holiday, we asked our community on Facebook to tell us, “If you could cover anything in chocolate, what would it be?” We present a mere sampling of the delectable and sometimes frightening responses:

Dashing through the…No!!!!

Dashing through the…No!!!!

The holiday season — the most dangerous time of year for music fans, when radio stations go on 24/7 Rudolph rotation, and malls and department stores flood your ears with saccharine yuletide melodies. It’s enough to squash whatever holiday good cheer you may have had left in your system. But, fear not! You can combat the onslaught of overly merry tunes with these fun, alternative holiday songs:

COOKIES! MMM, MMM, MMM

COOKIES! MMM, MMM, MMM

Imagine reading that title in your best Cookie Monster voice. ‘Cause that’s how we feel about cookies: deserving of an exclamation mark and best eaten with abandon. So many types of those delectable bites, perfectly portioned and with just enough punch in each one to satisfy and yet leave you wanting for more. Or better, eaten raw out of the bowl. But we digress. In honor of this most delectable and portable holiday treat, we present three cookie recipes that are sure to impress any holiday guest. Assuming you don’t finish the bowl first!

Winter running: getting outside when you’d rather stay in bed

Winter running: getting outside when you’d rather stay in bed

Getting yourself to workout is difficult, but adding snow, freezing temperatures, and the never-ending holiday feasting makes it about ten times harder (for me anyway)! Who wants to go outside and run when you can’t even feel your toes? But this coming April, I’ve decided to complete a half-marathon, despite my seasonal lack of motivation.

What we’re thankful for

What we’re thankful for

Thanksgiving. The name says it all. A time to give thanks, to reflect on what we have and enjoy time spent with loved ones. This year, in light of Hurricane Sandy, us East Coast House Partiers are even more thankful for the health and safety of our friends and family. So, we thought we’d collectively share what we have to be thankful for (our awesome readers and community, notwithstanding, of course!). Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
